Make your own

Thanks to blogs such as Schwurlie and Silent Sweetheart, DIY clothing is all the rage these days!

Now, I have a confession to make...I am AWFUL at sewing! Regardless of this however, I recently purchased a sewing machine and am determined to teach myself at least the basic skills! I'm struggling to find time to work through my 'learning to sew' book and so am not completely comfortable with following patterns etc just yet. So until then I figured there's no stopping me from customising clothes that I already have! This evening I felt like doing something creative and so cut up a dark green vintage blouse which I'd got for £2 from a charity shop and added a panel of horse material which I bought off of ebay.

First off I cut out the front right panel of the blouse. I then pinned it to the material that I wanted to replace it with so that I could cut around the edges and get the correct shape.

I neatened the edges with a zig zag stitch as the particular material I was working with frays easily and then I hemmed the sides that wouldn't be joined to the rest of the blouse.  Again, I do apologise for my poor sewing skills!

To be honest the rest is pretty self explanatory - I'm no expert so I don't want to start handing out instructions! BUT maybe one day ;) I sewed the panel back on to the rest of the blouse and then added buttons which I cut off of another vintage blouse...tadaah!

This was my first time doing something like this and so it was a trial run if you like, but next time I'm going to cut the sleeves short so that the panel fits better, and will also use a less stiff fabric, oopsi! Practice makes perfect!

  1. i love this print!

  2. Love the fabric you used. Would be nice to make a dress out of it :)

  3. I have a bunny version in red to! Maybe I'll use that to make a dress :)
